Distribution: Madagascar; in sand, in coastal bush.

Description: Small shrub, up to 2 m high, branching below the apex, main stem not rebranching, 50 cm high, main root swollen, napiform; branches green, becoming grey or black, differentiated into short shoots and long shoots, beginning with a long shoot and ending in a short shoot, the latter rebranching, cylindrical, green; spineless; leaves at the apices of the branches, ovate, variable in size, 3 to 7 cm long and 2 to 3 cm broad, pubescent beneath; cyathia at the short shoots, subterminal, unisexual, but male and female cyathia at the same plant, peduncle 2 mm long, cyathophylls inconspicuously small, acute, reddish green, 4 mm long, 4 mm wide, pubescent beneath, 5 glands, these elliptical, green.

Cultivation: Keep almost dry during winter, minimum temperature 14 °C; propagation by seeds and cuttings.
